Mine hoist control system

Mine Hoist Control System with Safety Controller and Brake Regulator

Case Study: Apply a new hoist control, safety controller and brake regulator to an existing hoist

Requirements: Design and supply an upgrade to the existing hoisting plant requiring new hoist control, electronic Lilly, brake regulator and new operator interface HMI. The hoist control needed to be integrated with an existing AC wound rotor control for service duty.

The hoist control panel, Safety Cube and brake regulator panels were integrated into one panel group to minimize on‐site wiring and to meet the limited space available.

The new console included two large touch‐screen monitors for increased functionality and ease of operation.

A maintenance computer was provided with long term data logging as well as diagnostic software with detailed troubleshooting capabilities.

Customized Springpack Hoist Brake Design

New Brake Calipers and Spring Pack Design

Case Study: Increase in Braking Capacity

Requirements: Our customer was facing increasing demands from their hoist which, in its existing configuration, the braking capacity was not going to be able to meet the demands.

The system in place included bulky brake weights and there was limited space available for any new equipment.

The solution included the design of new drum brake calipers, brake posts and tie rods. The brake weights were replaced with new spring packs with hydraulic release system with an increased braking capacity for the hoist.

The brake assembly was fully assembled to prove a test fit in the shop before being released to the customer.

Mine Hoist Regulated Braking Control

Design and Supply of New Regulated Brake Control Panels

Case Study: Incorporate an upgraded brake control into an existing brake system and hoist control

Requirements: Add a new brake control with regulated emergency braking within an existing hydraulic brake system and hoist control.

An older hoisting plant needed an upgrade to an outdated brake control and brake system. Spencer Engineering has an advanced brake control system that incorporates complete redundancy for all functions and is easily customized for this, or any other brake application. The new panel incorporates state-of-the-art manifolds and fully monitored valves for the entire brake system, to simplify maintenance and trouble-shooting.

The new brake control is PLC controlled for automatic hoisting and provides regulated braking during emergency stops. A new HMI system for the hoist operators was included as an upgrade to the operator’s console.

New Hoist Control with Safety Controller

New Hoist Control System with Safety Controller and Brake Control

Case Study: Incorporate an upgraded brake and hoist control into an existing hoist

Requirements: Design and supply an upgrade to the existing hoisting plant requiring new hoist control, electronic Lilly, brake control with new hydraulic supply and a new operator’s console. The hoist control needed to be integrated with an existing AC wound rotor control for automatic skipping.

The hoist control panel and the new Safety Cube panels were integrated into one panel group to minimize on-site wiring and to meet the limited space available.

The new hydraulic supply incorporated submersible pumps to satisfy a reduced footprint and also provided quieter operation – filtration, temperature control and system monitoring was improved.

The new console included two large touch-screen monitors for increased functionality and ease of operation.

New Drive and Control with Mezzanine Design

New Drive and Control

Case Study: Replacement of MG Set with New Drive and Hoist Control

Requirements: Outdated technology replaced and upgraded to an existing hoist ‐ limited time for change over and limited space, motor needed to be sent out for refurbish during the shutdown.

A new digital drive was engineered and specified for the duty requirements. To satisfy the limited space and shutdown constraints, a mezzanine was constructed above the existing power and control cabinets and the new installation was completed and pre‐commissioned, ready for a quick switchover from old to new. Downtime for the change, including final commissioning was less than two weeks, during which the hoist motor was removed and sent out for refurbish (4 days).

Mine hoist refurbishing

Refurbish In-Place Double Drum

Case Study: Refurbish Hoist Mechanicals In-Place

Requirements: The site required the complete refurbishment of an abandoned hoist in situ, underground.

Following the evaluation of the equipment, specifications for refurbish were developed to reflect the condition of each piece of mechanical and electrical equipment. The specifications reflected new regulations and industry practices for safety compliance.

Complete engineering for a new variable frequency drive, PLC control for the new digital drive with console.  Remote Access for troubleshooting was added. All refurbish work was completed with partial tear down and removal of the hoist.

Final duty for this hoist was for mine emergency escape.
